At St. James, we believe that some of the most meaningful learning happens beyond the classroom walls. Our Forest School provision gives every child the opportunity to learn, explore and grow in the natural environment, making the most of our fantastic school grounds and outdoor spaces.
Sessions are led by our highly experienced Forest School Lead, who carefully plans engaging activities that promote curiosity, resilience, teamwork and independence. Children are encouraged to take managed risks, solve problems, work collaboratively and develop a deeper understanding of the natural world through hands-on experiences.
Our youngest children in Class R attend Forest School every week throughout the year, helping them to build confidence, communication skills and a love of learning from the very start of their school journey. Children in all other year groups take part in a dedicated half-term block of Forest School sessions, ensuring that every pupil benefits from regular outdoor learning opportunities during their time at St. James.
Forest School sessions are carefully linked to each class’s THRIVE targets, supporting children’s emotional wellbeing, confidence and social development. Activities also connect with wider curriculum learning, allowing children to apply and deepen their knowledge in a practical and memorable way. Whether building dens, investigating habitats, creating natural artwork or developing teamwork skills through outdoor challenges, children experience learning in a rich and meaningful context.
We are incredibly proud of our Forest School programme and the opportunities it provides for children to connect with nature, develop essential life skills and discover that learning can happen anywhere. Through outdoor learning, we nurture confident, capable and resilient learners who are ready to flourish both in school and beyond.
