Design and Technology

At St. James CE Primary School, our Design and Technology curriculum is rooted in our Christian vision of “Life in all its Fullness” (John 10:10). We believe that Design and Technology inspires children to become creative problem-solvers who can improve the world around them through innovation, imagination and practical action. Through designing, making, evaluating and applying their learning, pupils develop the confidence to tackle real-life challenges while understanding how design and technology shape the way we live.

Our curriculum is underpinned by the principles of Teach, Nurture and Celebrate.

We Teach knowledge and skills through the carefully sequenced CUSP Design and Technology curriculum. Pupils progressively develop their understanding of the key disciplines of food and nutrition, mechanisms, structures, systems, electrical systems, textiles and understanding materials. As children move through the school, they revisit these disciplines with increasing challenge and complexity, allowing them to build secure knowledge and apply their learning in meaningful contexts. Through CUSP’s approach of Design, Make, Evaluate and Apply, pupils learn how to investigate problems, generate ideas, develop prototypes, test solutions and evaluate the effectiveness of their designs.

Design and Technology at St. James enables children to understand how products, systems and technologies are developed to solve problems and improve lives. Whether designing healthy recipes, creating sustainable products, constructing structures, developing electrical systems or exploring textiles, pupils learn how knowledge from science, mathematics, art and engineering can be applied to create purposeful outcomes. They develop resilience, independence and critical thinking while learning that successful design often requires refinement, evaluation and adaptation.

We Nurture a sense of love and hope in ourselves and others by helping children understand how design and technology reflect the diversity of people, cultures and communities across the world. Our curriculum introduces pupils to a wide range of designers, inventors, engineers, architects, food innovators and craftspeople whose work has shaped society and improved the lives of others. Through studies of textiles, food traditions, architecture, product design and technological innovation, children learn that design is influenced by cultural heritage, environmental needs and human creativity.

We deliberately explore how design and technology emerge from different cultures and traditions. Pupils learn about multicultural influences on food, global textile traditions, sustainable design and engineering solutions developed to meet the needs of different communities around the world. These experiences help children appreciate the diverse origins of design ideas and recognise that innovation comes from a wide range of people, places and perspectives. By seeing examples from different cultures, backgrounds and professions, pupils understand that anyone can be a designer, engineer or inventor.

A significant feature of our curriculum is developing pupils’ understanding of sustainability and responsible design. Children explore how materials are selected, how products are made and how design decisions affect people and the environment. Through projects involving recycling, reuse, sustainable materials and food sourcing, pupils learn how thoughtful design can contribute to a more sustainable future. These experiences encourage children to consider how they can use creativity and technology to make a positive difference in the world.

We Celebrate achievements and enquiring minds by providing opportunities for pupils to apply their skills through practical projects, collaborative learning and enrichment experiences. Children are encouraged to take ownership of the design process, test innovative ideas and reflect critically on their successes and challenges. We celebrate creativity, perseverance and problem-solving as highly as the final product itself.

A key element of our enrichment programme is our whole-school Design and Creativity Festival, held every three years, with the next festival taking place in 2026. During this immersive event, pupils work collaboratively on large-scale design challenges that bring together skills from Design and Technology, engineering, creativity and problem-solving. These experiences allow children to see themselves as designers and innovators while showcasing their learning to the wider community.

Through our Design and Technology curriculum, pupils leave St. James with a secure understanding of the design process, strong practical skills and an appreciation of how innovation influences everyday life. By developing creativity, resilience, critical thinking and an understanding of diverse design traditions, we equip children to flourish as confident problem-solvers and responsible citizens, living life in all its fullness.
