News, Reminders and Updates for Reception

Welcome to Class R, where your child’s exciting journey through their first year of school begins. We are delighted to welcome families into our warm, nurturing and stimulating learning environment, where every child is encouraged to grow in confidence, curiosity and independence.

Class R is led by Miss Smith, supported by our full-time Teaching Assistant, Ms Ball, who work together to ensure every child feels happy, safe and valued. Children learn within our purpose-built Early Years classroom, which offers free-flow access to a fantastic outdoor learning environment. Outdoors, children can explore and develop their skills through a range of engaging experiences, including our water area, gravel pit, construction opportunities and many other exciting resources designed to inspire creativity, discovery and play-based learning.

We look forward to working in partnership with you to make your child’s first year at St. James a happy and successful one.

Healthy Snack

As part of the Government’s Healthy Schools initiative, all children in Reception are provided with a free piece of fruit or vegetable each day for a healthy mid-morning snack. If you would like to send an additional snack for your child, please ensure it is fruit or vegetables only, such as cucumber sticks, pepper slices, cherry tomatoes, strawberries, apple slices or carrot sticks. Please avoid sending dried fruit, as current dental guidance recommends that it is eaten as part of a meal rather than as a snack to help protect young children’s teeth. Thank you for supporting our healthy eating expectations.

PE and Forest School

Our Forest School Day is Monday. Please ensure children wear joggers/leggings with school polo-shirt and jumper on Mondays. They should also bring in wellies/waterproofs.

Our PE day is Thursday. Please ensure children are in full PE Kit.

For Uniform expectations please see the Uniform page on the website.

Reading/Phonics Support

Encouraging and supporting your child with reading at home will help them to gain confidence. We would like to aim for every child to read aloud at home at least 5 times a week. For each 25 reads at a home a child earns a certificate and if they reach 250 reads they are able to choose a new book.

Forest School

Every Monday, children access our Forest School site to explore learning in an exciting, outdoor space.
Parents are welcome to sign up to join us for sessions.

Please ensure your child is appropriately dressed.
