At St James CE Primary School, our Christian vision is at the heart of everything we do:

This vision inspires us to Teach, Nurture and Celebrate, ensuring every child is given the opportunity to flourish academically, socially, emotionally and spiritually. We believe that every person is uniquely created and valued by God, and our goal is to help all members of our school community experience “life in all its fullness.” This vision shapes our curriculum, collective worship, relationships, pastoral care and the opportunities we provide for children to discover their talents and develop their character.

Our Christian Values
Our Christian values help us to live out our vision every day. They provide children with a strong moral and spiritual foundation and encourage them to reflect on their actions, relationships and the impact they have on the world around them.
We teach forgiveness and friendship, nurture hope and love, and celebrate thankfulness and perseverance. These values are woven throughout school life, collective worship, the curriculum and our interactions with one another. Children are encouraged to reflect on how these values shape their choices and support them in becoming compassionate, responsible and confident individuals.
Each half term we focus on a specific Christian value:

Our values are celebrated during collective worship, where children are recognised for demonstrating these values in their everyday lives.
An Inclusive Christian Community
St James is proud to be a welcoming and inclusive community. We celebrate the richness and diversity of our school family and recognise the many cultures, languages, experiences and backgrounds represented within our community.
Our Christian vision teaches us that everyone is valued and deserves to be treated with dignity, respect and kindness. By making our values explicit and living them out daily, we help children develop positive relationships, respect for others and a strong understanding of their responsibilities as local and global citizens.
Spirituality at St James
At St James, we believe spirituality is an important part of every child’s development.
“Spirituality is not something we can see; it is something we feel inside ourselves. It is about awe and wonder, asking questions, inspiration and being aware of something bigger outside of ourselves.”
We encourage children to develop their spirituality through opportunities to wonder, reflect, question and respond. Spiritual development is not confined to Religious Education or collective worship; it is woven throughout our curriculum and school life.
Each week, children are introduced to a new reflection image during collective worship and are invited to respond through discussion, prayer, writing or quiet contemplation. These moments encourage children to think deeply about themselves, others, the world around them and their place within it. Reflection opportunities can also be found throughout the school, helping children to pause, wonder and grow spiritually.
At St James, we encourage our children to be people who help others shine:

Prayer Spaces
Prayer Spaces are an important part of our Christian life and spiritual development.
Prayer Spaces in Schools provide opportunities for children of all faiths and none to explore life’s big questions, spirituality, faith and prayer in a safe, creative and reflective environment. Children are invited to reflect, wonder, pray or simply think quietly, making their own meaning from the experience in a way that is appropriate to them.
Every classroom has a dedicated prayer space linked to the school’s current Christian value. These spaces are used throughout the half term and during our whole-school Values Afternoons, giving children regular opportunities to engage in reflection and prayer. We also create whole-school prayer spaces and work closely with St James Church and the Diocese to develop meaningful prayer experiences for our children.
Collective Worship
Collective worship is central to the life of St James and plays a significant role in developing our Christian distinctiveness.
Daily worship provides opportunities to come together as a community to reflect on Bible teachings, explore our Christian values and consider how we can positively impact the world around us. Worship is led by school leaders, staff, pupils, members of St James Church and visiting speakers.
Children play an active role through our Worship Crew, who work alongside church members to plan and lead worship, write prayers and contribute to special services. Throughout the year we gather at St James Church and Hereford Cathedral for services and celebrations, strengthening our links with the wider Christian community.
Our worship is inclusive, invitational and inspirational, welcoming everyone while providing opportunities to explore Christian faith and values.
Living Out Our Vision Through Service and Courageous Advocacy
Our vision calls us not only to care for ourselves but also to make a positive difference in the lives of others.
Children at St James are encouraged to become courageous advocates who identify injustice and take action. Through initiatives such as fundraising activities, environmental projects, community support and charitable giving, children learn that small actions can have a significant impact.
Our School Council helped establish the Sharing Shed, providing practical support for members of our local community. Our Eco Club has led environmental campaigns, and pupils regularly participate in charitable projects that demonstrate compassion, generosity and service to others.
Strong Church and Community Partnerships
Our close partnership with St James Church is a defining feature of our Christian character. Church members regularly contribute to worship, prayer spaces, Experience Days and special services throughout the Christian year. Together, we help children develop a deeper understanding of faith, belonging and community.
We also work closely with the Diocese, Orchard Multi Academy Trust and a range of local, national and international partners. These partnerships enrich pupils’ experiences, broaden their understanding of the world and help them grow as confident, compassionate and reflective young people.
